"An Act of Faith" by Ian Watson

First appeared in Nature.  It troubled one reader to write in (editors dismissed complaint with a title:  "Science friction as fantasy irritates religious sensibilities").  This summary spoils the conceits.

God made humanity in his own image as a rapidly evolving testing ground for diseases that might affect him.  However, Jesus becomes too fat for the second coming because people keep eating transubstantiating wafering, which Jesus takes on as mass.  Interesting literalized, speculative what-if... although the reverse might be another possibility.
