Writers of the Future XXIII
An obsidian shard is found embedded in the heart of a dead warrior, implicating the wind-of-knives god. The investigator and the god had had a run-in before when his student had improperly called up the wind-of-knives although the god denies owning this shard. The investigator interviews guardians and knife-makers in order to know who had made it, but it turns out not to be a knife at all, which suggests who and what is responsible. More is at stake than a murder investigation.
Absorbing look at South American gods as though modern murder investigations were in practice.
