"Closer to You" by Scott Bradfield

We interrupt our regularly scheduled review to bring you Scott Bradfield reading himself:

First appeared in Tampa Review. Reprinted in his Greetings from Earth collection--a pdf of which you can get from the author for free.

The story's from the point of view of a girl whose understanding of the world lurks just outside of understanding.

Playful with words and perspective. Recommended.

10 Modern Must-Read Sci-Fi Masterpieces

  • I recall reading the term "Sci-Fi" was evil and to be avoided as demeaning, but it's hard to avoid, even by fans of the genre--useful comments as it led to investigate Steve Miller and Sharon Lee which I have not yet done.  They have two free ebooks to check out:
  • Fledgling
  • Agents of Change

Interviews:

Claire Messud reacts to an interview question:  Characters don't have to be sympathetic.

Movies:
Kickstarter for a movie of Philip K. Dick's Radio Free Albermuth
Better trailer for new Superman

"This Other Earth" by RPL Johnson

free ebook at Smashwords

A pretty cool alien invasion story.  Futuristic swash-buckling adventure, killing alien bugs and the like.  It treats an Earth terra- or xeno-formed, which sets up a nice metaphor for climate change.  Even better it treats our struggle to survive the change.  This might be worth expansion into a novel if more speculative bones were dug up.

There's a minor flash fiction piece about virtual reality included.

free ebook: Golden Queen by David Farland

I enjoyed this one:  The Golden Queen - Book 1 of the Golden Queen Series by David Farland.  It begins in what feels like a fantasy world and gets gradually stranger and more science fictional.  Good fun.

Links: Free ebook, Free story, Shiner, Campbell, Tidbeck, NASA, Bullies

Interview I did with Lewis Shiner a few years back.  For some reason, my memory thought it longer.  Maybe because I'd done so much research for it.

Free ebook of John W. Campbell, one of the early major forces behind SF

Free Karin Tidbeck story online

Rumors of NASA's death greatly exaggerated?

School bully:  a short movie by Key & Peele on bullies that's simultaneously true, funny, and sad.  Too bad this has words you can't play at school.

Free ebooks

David Marusek, a fine and sometimes hilarious writer of science fiction, is giving away some of his short stories.

Also, Paul di Filippo offers for free his fun novella in the Linear City series, A Princess of the Linear Jungle, which pays homage to many SF classics.
